Mazda is bringing two new concept cars to the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show this month. The first concept, which it calls a “product concept” is a preview of the next-generation Mazda3, while the second is called a design vision model.
The product concept features a hatchback layout, but under the skin it features Mazda’s Skyactiv-Vehicle-Architecture and several other new technologies. The concept is also powered by Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X engine, which is a gasoline engine that uses compression injection.
The design vision model previews Mazda’s new design direction, which features a lot more creases and lines than today’s Kodo design language. We can also see that the concept will feature four doors, so it won’t be a preview of a new RX-7/ RX-9, like some of us had hoped.
“Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda. We will showcase a concept with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars. Among them is Skyactiv-X, a petrol engine that achieves a long-held dream in the global automotive industry,” stated Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO Masamichi Kogai.
Both concept cars will debut on October 25.
