The Hummer is officially back with the arrival of the GMC Hummer EV and while it’s a lot more environmentally friendly than the previous gas powered Hummer models, a new study finds that it emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions.

According to a study by ACEEE, the GMC Hummer EV is not as green as you would probably expect from an electric vehicle. The big issue is that the electrical grids that power EVs are powered by fossil fuels. Which means until these grids transition from fossil fuels. there will still be emissions from driving EVs.

While this is a known case, there are still differences for EVs, based on size. In the case of the large, 9,000 pound Hummer EV, it emits more emissions than a gas powered midsize sedan. The study finds that the Hummer EV emits 341 grams of CO2 per mile, which is a significant improvement of the Hummer H1 with its 889 grams. The bad part is that the Hummer EV still emits more emissions than the Chevy Malibu, a gas powered midsize sedan, which emits over 320 grams per mile.

With 1,000 horsepower on tap, it’s no surprise that the Hummer EV is not as green as other EVs. The Chevy Bolt emits 92 grams of CO2 per mile.
