Although Ford’s electric car lineup isn’t too impressive today with the Focus Electric and plug-in hybrid versions of the Fusion and C-Max, Ford has some big plans in the works. Ford has announced that it is setting up an internal team, called “Team Edison” to develop a lineup of new electric cars.
Ford made the announcement about “Team Edison” confirming that it will introduce more electric cars beyond the upcoming 300-mile range crossover electric car that will be introduced by 2020.
“We see an inflection point in the major markets toward battery electric vehicles,” Sherif Marakby, Ford’s head of electrification and autonomous vehicles told Automotive News. “We feel it’s important to have a cross-functional team all the way from defining the strategy plans and implementation to advanced marketing.”
Ford is currently planning on introducing 13 electrified vehicles over the next five years, but the number of fully-electric models is expected to increase. Ford may even team up with other companies to introduce the electric cars.
“We are open to partnerships, but this team will be responsible to define the strategy,” Marakby stated. Ford recently signed a partnership with Anhui Zotye Automobile Co., Ltd. to develop electric cars for China.
Ford’s crosstown rival, General Motors also recently revealed its updated electrification strategy, which will see the introduction of two new electric cars in the next 18 months. Plus GM is planning on introducing 20 new electric cars by 2023.
