A new chapter is being written for BMW Alpina. To mark the occasion, BMW put on display the Vision BMW Alpina at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2026. The dramatic design study is meant to show what the future holds for the storied name now under the aegis of the BMW Group.

But don’t mistake it for yet another ostentatious show car. According to BMW, the concept is an exercise in reinterpreting the Alpina way of doing things – that old formula of marrying long-distance comfort with outright performance which has set their models apart for decades.

There is a distinction between an Alpina and a BMW M car. Where the M division can be unapologetically aggressive, Alpina has always been more about understated luxury and speed. The Vision BMW Alpina seems intent on holding fast to that identity.

It is a large four-seat coupe, coming in at over 204 inches, with a roofline that sweeps low to suggest both ease and velocity. Under the hood is a V8 that will have no trouble producing the kind of deep exhaust note you would expect from an Alpina.

In appearance, the designers have been more reserved than with some recent BMW concepts. You will see a take on the kidney grille and the shark-nose front end, but the Alpina touches are woven into the bodywork rather than put on display.

You won’t have to look hard for nods to the classics. The multi-spoke wheels are as much a part of the design as ever, and the traditional deco stripes make a reappearance in a more subdued fashion beneath the paint.

Step inside and the focus is on the quality of the craft. The cabin is appointed with open-pore wood and crystal controls in a minimalist style, the leather having been sourced from suppliers in the Alpine region. Then there is the self-deploying rear console with its crystal glasses and water bottle; an oddity perhaps, but one that harkens back to the grand touring sensibilities of the brand.

Burkard Bovensiepen, the founder, used to say “a comfortable driver is a faster driver” and BMW is making sure that philosophy is alive and well in the Vision. They have even put in a special Comfort+ mode for a ride softer than your average BMW luxury car. The new Panoramic iDrive system has been given an Alpina treatment too, with blue and green graphics to evoke the Bavarian Alps.

This concept also signals the start of BMW Group’s hands-on role with the brand after the 2026 acquisition. BMW intends for Alpina to sit in its own niche, somewhere between a standard BMW and the opulence of Rolls-Royce. A production model based on the 7 Series is due next year.
