BMW has unveiled the 2027 BMW X5, which gets a bold new look. The fifth generation of its top-selling luxury SUV is here, and for the first time you will find a fully electric BMW iX5 in the mix. The latest X5 also brings with it improved driver aids, a wider array of powertrains and some of BMW’s newest Neue Klasse tech.

When the new X5 goes on sale you can have it with a gasoline, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric setup; a hydrogen variant of the iX5 is planned for down the road.

The headline act is the introduction of the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the first ever fully electric X5. Sitting on the BMW’s sixth-gen eDrive platform, the iX5 has an 800-volt system and dual motors that make 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque from its 144-kWh battery. That should be enough to do 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds according to BMW, with an EPA range of up to 435 miles.

Charging is where the iX5 makes a big step up. With DC fast charging at 460 kW, you can go from 10 to 80 per cent in roughly 22 minutes or put about 170 miles on the clock in 10. It comes with a NACS port as standard and can even charge your home or another vehicle thanks to bidirectional capabilities.

Don’t think BMW has given up on the internal combustion engine just yet.

The X5 40 is powered by a revised 3.0-liter inline-six and a 48-volt mild-hybrid. You get 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque out of it, good for a 4.8-second sprint to 60. Then there is the plug-in X5 50e xDrive which puts out 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque by way of a more potent electric motor. BMW says you can expect 44 miles of all-electric range, some 15% better than before.

A V8 M Performance model is coming in 2027, and the production iX5 Hydrogen will follow.

You will know it is an X5 right away, but the fifth-gen has picked up some styling from the Neue Klasse concepts. The front is more upright with slimmer BMW Iconic Glow kidney grilles and double-X LED lighting. There are flush Winglet door handles, cleaner lines and a sculpted rear. New wheels of up to 23 inches are available, as are the M Sport and M Sport Professional packages for those who want something more aggressive.

Step inside and the transformation is complete. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X are at the heart of the digital cockpit. A 17.9-inch free-standing screen is the focal point, working in tandem with Panoramic Vision to put information at the base of the windshield. A 3D head-up display and a reworked steering wheel round things out.

Novelty for the front passenger is a 14.6-inch display to run apps and videos while you drive (an interior camera will dim it if you are not looking at the road). The cabin is appointed with fine materials like slate trim and crystal glass controls, and you can have ventilated massaging seats, automatic doors and a Bowers & Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos.

The suite of driver assistance has been overhauled. Highway Assistant will let you take your hands off the wheel at up to 85 mph on suitable roads, and Active Lane Change will handle a lane switch once you have given it the nod via the side mirror. There is also better trailer stability and remote parking among the options.

The X5 40 xDrive will be the first to arrive this October, with the rest of the lineup – the RWD 40, the 50e and the iX5 60 – due in the first quarter of 2027. Here is how the pricing breaks down
