The 2027 BMW 7 Series gets a complete redesign, bringing a lot of new technology, a more electric focus, and a fresh look. It’s also the first car to get BMW’s next-generation “Neue Klasse” tech, which will eventually be in all of their models. This is the biggest change the 7 Series has had in its seven generations and really emphasizes digital features, going electric, and making the back seats incredibly luxurious.

BMW’s already somewhat controversial design for luxury vehicles is being taken even further. The new 7 Series has a very solid, block-like appearance, with an illuminated kidney grille called “Iconic Glow” and very slim, crystal-like headlights. The sides are simpler and cleaner, the rear lights are redesigned to be more modern and understated, and you can get M Sport and M Performance versions for a sportier vibe, along with new 22-inch wheels and two-tone paint jobs.

Inside, the 7 Series is really different. BMW is really going for a luxurious, tech-filled experience for everyone in the car, not just the driver. Key features include the new Panoramic iDrive system with the BMW Operating System X, a screen for the front passenger (which is now standard), an optional 8K streaming and app-equipped Theatre Screen for those in the back, Bowers & Wilkins sound with Dolby Atmos, and “Executive Lounge” seating for a chauffeur-driven feel. The interior combines traditional luxurious materials like leather, wood, and metal with lots of digital elements. It’s quite something, but it’s starting to feel more like a tech centre you can travel in than a car for driving.

BMW will have lots of different engines available, from mildly electrified gas engines, to plug-in hybrids, and fully electric models. The most important news is that the fully electric versions can now go up to 447 miles on a single charge (WLTP) thanks to BMW’s latest battery technology and the sixth-generation eDrive system. You also get updated petrol engines with 48V mild-hybrid tech, two plug-in hybrid versions and various M Performance models for a performance boost. BMW is giving people choices as more and more people switch to electric cars.

There are also big improvements to the driver assistance and automation features, and BMW is using AI more and more to make the car safer and easier to use. It includes Level 2 driver assistance (hands-free driving up to 81 mph where it’s allowed), help with city driving using the navigation system, AI-powered parking and better information for the driver shown on BMW Maps. It’s not fully self-driving, but it does take the 7 Series further towards being able to drive itself for parts of the journey.

Despite all the technology, BMW says the 7 Series still tries to be both comfortable and good to drive. It has adaptive air suspension as standard and optional upgrades to the chassis, aiming to give a smooth ride and responsive handling. However, because it’s getting bigger and heavier and focuses more on the people in the back, it’s leaning more towards being a car to be driven in than a car to actually drive yourself.

The new 7 Series will be officially unveiled on April 22nd, 2026, and will go into production in July 2026.

In short, the latest 7 Series really commits BMW to a future where technology is the most important thing in luxury cars. With its enormous screens, electric versions that can travel a long distance, and features that use AI, it’s obvious where BMW is going. But as with every 7 Series, people will ask: is it still a car for drivers… or has it become a high-tech, luxurious place to relax on wheels?
