Volvo has unveiled the updated 2028 XC40. The XC40 arrives with a restyled exterior, an expanded infotainment display featuring Google Gemini and a host of new safety tech.

We can expect production of the revised 2028 Volvo XC40 to get under way in the fall, with the first deliveries arriving early next year.
The 2028 XC40 gets a fresher face with a few other smaller styling updates.
The front end is where you will notice it first: the Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have been reworked with a new take on the brand’s signature lighting, and the hood, fenders, bumper and grille are all new. At the back, there is a redesigned bumper and tailgate along with new LED taillights. New diamond-cut wheels are being introduced in 18, 19 and 20-inch sizes.

Technology is at the heart of the cabin changes. There is a new 11.2-inch touchscreen that is both larger and sharper; according to Volvo, the latest user interface means fewer taps to get to what one needs.
Then there is Google Gemini. The AI from Google lets the driver converse with the XC40 in a more natural way to handle messages or plan a route and any stops along the way.
Volvo has put in some new materials as well. For the first time there is an option of Arianne Cardamom leather with Brown Ash wood trim, though Black Ash and aluminum are on offer too. A wireless phone charger has been updated and the ambient lighting revised.

Not all the improvements on the 2028 XC40 are plain to see. Under the skin, Volvo has put in place a new sensor and software platform to give the vehicle’s safety systems a better vantage point. This involves new forward-facing and corner radars, a fresh camera setup out front, 12 ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras.
With that hardware comes better driver assistance. The optional Pilot Assist has been tuned for smoother lane following and now includes lane-change help. A 360-degree camera option will provide a 3D view for easier low-speed work like parking. And should the XC40 sense a collision, automatic emergency braking and steering will either put a warning to the driver or step in to avoid it. Door Opening Alert is another feature, sounding off if a cyclist or other road user is near when a door is about to be opened.

As with other recent Volvos, the 2028 XC40 will be able to receive over-the-air updates, so the company can tinker with the software long after it has left the lot.
