Volkswagen may have disappointed its fans when it decided to not bring the small T-Roc crossover to the United States, but as expected, VW is working on another crossover that will be offered here and in China. Currently dubbed the “Volks-SUV” internally, the small crossover will be positioned below the Tiguan and will be sold globally, except not in Europe.
“We call it internally Volks-SUV – the production car won’t have that name – because it turned from a regional project into a global project,” VW brand sales chief Juergen Stackmann told Automotive News.
VW has released a single teaser of the new small crossover, which borrows styling cues from the larger Atlas. VW brand CEO Herbert Diess has confirmed that VW wants to sell 400,000 globally a year and production will take place in several countries, like China and Mexico. Even though we haven’t seen the new small crossover yet, production is expected to kick off in August in China. Production will expand to Mexico, Russia and Argentina in 2020.
Since production won’t start in Mexico until 2020, it’s safe to assume that the U.S. won’t get the new small crossover until sometime after that. The small crossover will be based on the MQB platform, but we don’t know any details about what will be under the hood.
While the new small crossover will fill out the smaller end of VW’s SUV lineup, VW is also working on updates to the other end with the new 2019 Touareg set to debut next week in Beijing.
