Volkswagen doesn’t currently offer any performance crossovers in the US, but that could change soon. In Europe VW offers the T-Roc R and Tiguan R, but neither model is sold here. Well VW has just given us a hint at a more performance focused Atlas Cross Sport, with the debut of the Atlas Cross Sport GT concept.

The big news is what’s under the hood, since the Cross Sport GT concept is powered by the same engine that powers the excellent Golf R. The Cross Sport GT is powered by the EA888 2.0 TSI engine with an IS38 turbo and an additional front-mounted radiator from a Mk7 Golf R. The engine generates more than 300 horsepower and is mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

“The launch of the all-new Golf GTI and Golf R got us thinking about how to inject some of that VW magic into our SUVs,” said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “This concept is proof that it’s possible to build SUVs that could appeal to our performance enthusiast base.”

Other additions include 22-inch ABT Sport HR AEROWHEELs, wrapped in Yokohama Advan Sport V105 UHP 285/35R22 tires, ST Suspension XTA Plus 3 coilovers with color-matched and GT Concept -branded springs, and TAROX eight-piston front brakes.

Inside the concept features a unique Eisvogelblau color that’s used on the Recaro Sporster CS seats, gear shifter and seat belts. The second row also gets a unique center console.
