Toyota is bringing several new models to the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, like the Toyota Tj Cruiser and Crown concepts. Toyota has also unveiled a sportier concept, the Toyota GR HV Sports concept, which takes the Toyota 86 in a greener direction.

It’s obvious that the GR HV Sports concept is based on the 86, but the front and rear of the concept have been completely changed. At the front, the redesigned face has more angular LED headlights that flank a longer nose. The rear also gets new taillights and a rear diffuser, while the biggest change to the profile is a new targa top.

Under the hood the 86’s 2.0L boxer engine has been replaced by a hybrid powertrain that features Toyota Hybrid System-Racing technology. The hybrid system does send its power to the ground via an automatic transmission, but it can be switched into an automated manual mode with H-pattern shifting. Lastly to improve the performance of the Toyota GR HV Sports concept, the hybrid battery is positioned in the center of the concept.
