Andy Palmer, Nissan’s Chief Planning Officer previously confirmed that a rear-wheel-drive coupe based on the IDx concept was in Nissan’s future product plans, but now Pierre Loing, Nissan North America Vice President of Product Planning is stating otherwise. Unlike Toyota, who leveraged a partnership with Subaru to bring the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ coupes to life, Nissan would have to build the coupe on its own, something that Loing says is “not easy.”

The production version of the IDx would need a new rear-wheel-drive platform, since Nissan’s current RWD platforms are used by larger, more expensive vehicles. The cost to build a new platform for a low volume sports car doesn’t build a very strong business case, so it may not happen.

According to Loing, Nissan is still debating a production version.
