Chrysler has already acknowledged plans to add a new eight-speed automatic transmission to some of its models. Now according to the latest sources, the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 equipped with the Penastar V6, will be the first recipients of the new transmission.

The 2012 model year Charger and 300 V6 models will be the first Chrysler models to get the transmission, while the Charger R/T, 300C, Challenger R/T, and SRT8 versions of all three models will continue to have the five-speed automatic. It isn’t completely known why Chrysler is choosing to launch the transmission with the lesser powered models first, but it is being speculated that it may be so that any technical issues can be sorted out before it is offered with the more powerful Hemi V8. Another possibility is that the new eight-speed automatic may make a larger fuel economy improvement in the V6 compared to the V8, which would make more of a statement.
