Jeep recently unveiled the refreshed 2019 Jeep Renegade SUV, which arrives with a new turbocharged 1.3L four-cylinder, but that engine feels a bit old school compared to what’s coming next. Jeep has confirmed that it’s working on a new Renegade plug-in hybrid that’s expected to arrive in early 2020.

2019 Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid is just one of the thirty electrified models that Fiat Chrysler is planning to introduce by 2022. It originally announced in June that it would invest 9 billion euros ($10.3 billion) to add electric and hybrid models to its lineup.

When the Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid comes to life in 2020, it will be produced at FCA’s Melfi plant in southern Italy, which already produces the Renegade and its cousin, the Fiat 500X. FCA is spending 200 million euros on the new Renegade’s plug-in hybrid powertrain.
