The all-new Hyundai Santa Fe offers a choice of three engine options, including a new diesel, but Hyundai will soon add two electrified powertrains to the options list. Hyundai has confirmed that it will soon introduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Santa Fe within the next 18 months.

Hyundai execs confirmed the Santa Fe hybrid and plug-in hybrid models at the Santa Fe’s launch in Barcelona. It’s expected that the Santa Fe hybrid will be powered by the same 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain as the Tucson. The Tucson hybrid is powered by a 183-hp 2.0L diesel engine that’s mated to a 16-hp electric motor.

There are less details about the Santa Fe plug-in hybrid, but Autocar predicts that it will likely borrow its powertrain from the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima plug-in hybrids.

It’s not known if either the Santa Fe hybrid or Santa Fe plug-in hybrid will be offered in the US, but it would give Hyundai a rival to the upcoming Ford Explorer hybrid and Honda Pilot plug-in hybrid models.
