Buyers in Europe should be excited since they are getting the first Hyundai with a diesel mild hybrid powertrain. The 2019 Hyundai Tucson is the first Hyundai to arrive with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The restyled 2019 Hyundai Tucson will be available this summer in Europe with a 2.0L diesel engine that combines a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a mild hybrid start generator. The 48-volt hybrid system is able to assist the diesel engine with up to 12 kW of power and also helps make it more efficient.

Thanks to the 48-volt system the diesel engine can turn off during light acceleration or during deceleration. The 2.0L diesel engine will debut with the technology this summer, but Hyundai has also announced that a smaller 1.6L diesel engine will arrive with the 48-volt technology next spring.

Kia recently also revealed the same technology with the 2019 Kia Sportage. Here in the U.S. the technology will eventually arrive, but with a gasoline engine.
