Right now if you want to get the keys to a Honda Civic Type R you have to be ready to pay at least $34,775, but that may soon change. Earlier this year there were reports that a cheaper Civic Type R is in the works and now we have more proof that it will arrive for the 2018 model year.

The Truth About Cars has found paperwork that Honda filed with NHTSA that lists two versions of the Civic Type R. The current Civic Type R Touring model is listed under code FK8G7, while a second model is listed without the Touring name and with a FK8G3 model code.

The model listed as simply “Type R” still comes with a six-speed manual transmission, but it’s not known what Honda will delete for the cheaper 2018 Honda Civic Type R. The cheaper version will likely get smaller wheels and maybe even delete some of the luxury items, like dual-zone automatic climate control and different seats. Pricing is expected to start in the $30,000 range.

And what if the actual TypeR is the non-touring version? And the Touring will actually cost even more than the “base” TypeR?

Agreed, If you look at the list of cars all of them are in order of price. That new model is under the Type R which means more than likely it will have even more features bumping the price up. At best I would think maybe they lower the price of the current Type R and make the Touring cost a bit more. Then we both win.
