Last April, Honda and General Motors announced that the two automakers were teaming up to build two new Honda electric vehicles. Now a new report on Tuesday claims that General Motors will build these two new electric SUVs, one for Acura and the second for Honda.
Automotive News has received the tip from sources that are familiar with the plans. The report claims that the Acura SUV will enter production in 2024 at GM’s Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, which is also the same plant that will start building the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV in 2022.
The Honda SUV will enter production a year earlier in 2023 at GM’s plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.
Both electric SUVs are expected to be mid-size models that will be based on General Motors’ BEV3 platform with its Ultium battery technology. The BEV3 platform is able to support several different types of vehicles, from cars to SUVs and pickup trucks.
The Ultium batteries also come in a range of sizes from 50-200 kilowatt-hours, with the largest size providing a driving range over 400 miles.
