Ford unveiled the first all-electric F-150, the 2022 F-150 Lightning a few months ago. Since then interest in the electric pickup has remained strong with already over 120,000 reservations. While buyers may be excited to get their hands on the F-150 Lightning, Ford has also confirmed that production will be limited in its first model year. The good news is that a new report claims that Ford has decided to double its F-150 Lighting production goals.
Reuters is reporting that Ford will spend an additional $850 million to double production of the F-150 Lightning at its new plant – the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. According to one source, pre-launch interest in the F-150 Lightning, especially from commercial customers, helped Ford make the decision to ramp up production. “They were pleasantly surprised by the demand for the Lightning,” stated one source.
Ford is targeting annual production of more than 80,000 in 2024, which is up from the original 40,000 unit target. Ford plans to build approximately 15,000 F-150 Lightning trucks in 2022, which will be ramped up to 55,000 in 2023. Ford is also reportedly working on the second generation F-150 Lightning that will launch in late 2025, by that time Ford expects to be able to build 160,000 units a year.
