Ford has taken the wraps off the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 this morning at the Detroit Auto Show. The new top dog of the Mustang family arrives this fall with more than 700 horsepower, which makes it the “quickest street-legal Mustang ever.”

In addition to being the quickest Mustang ever, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is also the most powerful Ford produced, yet. Under the hood it’s powered by a supercharged 5.2-literĀ V8 that’s mated to a TREMECĀ 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 2020 Shelby GT500 can reach 60 mph in the mid three second range and the quarter mile in under 11 seconds.

To keep that more than 700 horsepower under control, the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 a Brembo braking system, the next generation MagneRide suspension, and a new electric power steering system. Thanks to the chassis upgrades, Ford says that the GT 500 has the highest-ever lateral acceleration from a Mustang.

There are also two handling packages available. The first Handling Package includes adjustable strut top mounts and spoiler with Gurney flap. If you want even more, the Carbon Fiber Track Package features exposed 20-inch carbon fiber wheels with 0.5-inch-wider rear wheels (11.5-inch), custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, adjustable exposed carbon fiber GT4 track wing and splitter wickers with integrated dive plane. The rear seat is deleted to reduce weight.

Compared to the GT 350, the GT 500 gets a wider front grille and a more muscular hood. According to Ford, the angular grille and new hood are inspired by fighter jet aircraft. Wider front and rear fenders make room for the massive 20-inch wheels and the rear gets a new rear spoiler and updated composite materials in the rear diffuser.

Inside, Recaro seats and a 12-speaker B&O Play audio system are available.
