Mazda has announced that Duran Duran will headline the world debut of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata at a live event in Monterey, California on September 3.

Mazda has announced that Duran Duran will headline the world debut of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata at a live event in Monterey, California on September 3. Mazda will also hold simultaneous global reveals in Tokyo and Barcelona.
“Duran Duran and the MX-5 Miata both made their world debuts in the 1980s and captured the hearts and imagination of an entire generation,” said Russell Wager, vice president of Marketing, MNAO. “In 25 years, both the car and the band have evolved while staying true to their roots. It is this combination of authenticity and endurance that makes the pairing of the MX-5 and Duran Duran so appropriate for this reveal.”

The 2016 MX-5 Miata is going to ride on a new platform, which will see it drop around 200 pounds compared to the current model. It hasn’t been confirmed what will power the new MX-5 Miata, but the latest rumor claims that it will be offered with the same 1.5L four-cylinder as the new Mazda2, in addition to a 2.0L SkyActiv engine. A coupe version is also rumored.
