BMW seems to be stepping away from its original i sub-brand of electric cars and is instead electrifying its regular lineup. Right now if you want an electrified 3 Series, you’ll have to settle for the 330e plug-in hybrid, but a new report claims that a fully-electric BMW 3 Series EV may debut this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Germany’s Handelsblatt is reporting that the fully-electric 3 Series could be BMW’s answer to the Tesla Model 3 with a driving range around 248 miles on the EU cycle. The news about a fully-electric 3 Series shouldn’t be all that surprising, since BMW has already confirmed plans to introduce an electric X3 in a few years.

Will the 3 Series that we see debut this fall be based on the current 3 Series? Not likely. An all-new BMW 3 Series is expected to arrive in 2018, so the model we see this fall could be an electrified concept version of the next-generation 3 Series.
