Earlier this year, Porsche fans were bracing for the end of an era with news that production of the 718 Boxster and Cayman would wrap up this fall, ahead of fully electric replacements expected around 2027. But in a surprise move, Porsche has now announced that new internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman are on the way.

There’s a catch, though. Porsche says only the “top” versions of the Boxster and Cayman will continue with gasoline engines. That likely means future RS and GT4 RS variants will retain ICE power, while lower trim levels will transition entirely to electric drivetrains.
The news came during Porsche’s recent “Strategic Alignment” conference call, where the automaker outlined plans to scale back its all-in EV strategy. Alongside the 718 announcement, Porsche also confirmed that its upcoming flagship SUV will be offered with both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains instead of a fully electric version, while a replacement for the gas-powered Macan is currently in development.
For enthusiasts, the confirmation that Porsche will keep offering ICE versions of its beloved mid-engine sports cars is welcome news—and a reminder that the brand isn’t ready to fully let go of the combustion era just yet.
