The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has announced that the 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 have earned the institute’s highest safety rating – Top Safety Pick+.

To qualify for the award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in six IIHS crashworthiness tests, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Lastly to get the highest award, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims. The headlights on both models received the good rating. The caveat here is that only the automatic equipped versions receive the award, since the manual versions aren’t available with a front crash prevention system that earned a superior rating. The good news is that either version performed well in the crash tests.
