Initially when the 2018 BMW X2 was tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it missed out on the Top Safety Pick rating, since its head restraints were only rated as acceptable. Well BMW acted fast and BMW X2 models built after July 2018 are now rated as a Top Safety Pick.

To earn the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must have good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, plus available front crash prevention that earns an advanced or superior rating and available acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

The 2018 BMW X2 missed out on the higher Top Safety Pick+ award, which requires an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap test and good-rated headlights. The X2 received a good rating in the passenger-side overlap test, but its headlights were only rated as acceptable.
