Earlier this week BMW unveiled the updates to the 2017 i3, which includes an upgrade to the battery, which will give it a 114 mile driving range. What does BMW have in store for the i8? A new report claims that the i8 is going to get a power upgrade as part of its mid-life cycle update, next year.
Currently the i8 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system that pairs a 1.5L 3-cylinder engine and an electric motor, with combined output at 362 horsepower. According to Autocar, the updates will include tweaks to the engine and a more powerful electric motor that could give it an output closer to 420 horsepower. BMW isn’t expected to stop there, with the i8 also expected to get a more powerful battery, chassis upgrades and maybe even wireless inductive charging.
