VW is getting ready to celebrate the iconic GTI’s 40th birthday in 2016 and to celebrate the big birthday, VW has unveiled the new GTI Clubsport. The GTI Clubsport was originally unveiled as a concept earlier this year, but the production version is going to debut this month at the Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful production GTI yet.
The GTI Clubsport packs 261 horsepower, but an overboost function can provide a total 286 horsepower for up to 10 seconds. This added power is activated simply by pressing the throttle fully. The Golf GTI Clubsport sprints from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds with a 6-speed manual gearbox; with the optional 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the time is reduced to 5.9 seconds. The Golf GTI Clubsport has a top speed of 155 mph with both transmissions.
To make the GTI Clubsport stand out from the standard GTI, VW’s designers gave it a new front bumper, new side sills, a new rear diffuser, a new multi-part roof spoiler and exclusive forged aluminum-alloy wheels. The interior gets special sport seats featuring tartan fabric upholstery, red stitching, a golf-ball-shaped shifter knob and black headliner.
As awesome as the GTI Clubsport is, the bad news is that it won’t be coming to the U.S.
