Toyota has officially unveiled the much anticipated all-new fourth-generation 2016 Prius at an event in Las Vegas. The new Prius is the first vehicle based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture and as predicted has a ten percent fuel economy improvement over the current model.
The new Prius has a shape that is similar to the second and third generation models, but its far more aggressive than ever before. Toyota says that its exterior is “inspired by a runner in the starting blocks.” Its exterior is 2.4inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.8 inches lower than the current model. The larger dimensions will give more occupant and cargo room. Toyota also says that one of the significant attributes of the TNGA platform is a lower center of gravity and a more responsive suspension.
The 2016 Prius gets an all-new rear double wishbone suspension that is supposed to produce a better connection to the road and a more rigid body helps improve responsiveness while cornering. Toyota hasn’t revealed the powertrain specs for the 2016 Prius, but a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency should give the standard Prius a rating around 55 mpg. The new Eco model will get an even higher rating.
Prius set the global benchmark for hybrids, but now is breaking its own boundaries with more engaging style and fun-to-drive dynamics,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “What was once a rational purchase that for many customers focused on fuel economy, is now so much more. This Prius will invite new drivers into the category by delivering an impressive look and feel, built on the foundation of safety and eco-consciousness that define the vehicle’s heritage.”
