Honda is reportedly planning to celebrate its upcoming 70th birthday by launching a successor to the S2000. According to a source that spoke with Car & Driver, Honda’s engineers are hard at work on the new sports car.
Honda is reportedly planning to celebrate its upcoming 70th birthday by launching a successor to the S2000. According to a source that spoke with Car & Driver, Honda’s engineers are hard at work on the new sports car.
“A large complement of R&D staff from Japan are already in Ohio working on the car. They have more time now that the NSX is finished.”

The source also confirmed that the new convertible will be powered by a de-tuned version of the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that powers Europe’s Civic Type R. It’s not yet known how close it will get to the 300 horsepower mark. While Honda also currently doesn’t have a rear-wheel drive platform that it can use for the new convertible, Honda will most likely just build a new platform from the ground up for the S2000 successor. The platform could also eventually be used for a new Acura model as well, including a version of the Acura Precision concept that debuted earlier this year.
If the reports are true, the S2000 successor will debut sometime in 2018 as a 2019 model.
