VW has unveiled the US-spec version of the all-wheel drive Golf Alltrack, which is going to debut this week at the New York Auto Show, ahead of its arrival this fall.
VW has unveiled the US-spec version of the all-wheel drive Golf Alltrack, which is going to debut this week at the New York Auto Show, ahead of its arrival this fall.
The 2017 Golf Alltrack is based on the Golf SportWagen, but features an increased ride height and body cladding to give it a somewhat more rugged look. Under the hood, the Golf Alltrack is powered by a 1.8L turbocharged TSI engine that generates 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft. of torque. Initially it will be available only with a six-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission, but a six-speed manual will be added later. All four wheels will keep this wagon moving, thanks to VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. In normal driving, the Alltrack acts like a front-wheel-drive car for better fuel economy, but as soon as the system detects wheel slip, up to 50 percent of the drive torque can be shipped to the rear wheels. A Drive Mode selector includes “Off-Road Mode,” which adds hill descent control and optimizes traction control for off-road terrain. The Off-Road HMI displays compass, steering angle, and altitude when driving off-road.
On the outside, you’ll notice that the Golf Alltrack rides almost one-inch higher off the ground than the Golf SportWagen. It also gets cladding for the bumpers, wheel wells and side sills. The front fascia also has a unique honeycomb grille.
