VW kills the GTI Two-Door in the U.S.

GTI fans we have some bad news for you. If you’ve been a fan of the two-door VW GTI since it debuted in the 1970s, you’ll be sad to hear that VW will be discontinuing production very soon. VW has announced that production of the US-spec two-door version of the GTI will end in a couple weeks, leaving the four-door to carry on the iconic badge.

The news isn’t all that surprising since two-door models continue to lose market share. VW says that its dealers and buyers mainly wanted the four-door GTI, so it decided to streamline the GTI lineup by only offering a single body style. VW made a similar move with the high-performance Golf R, which is now only offered as a four-door model.
