Volkswagen is getting ready to compete in this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 24 in Colorado with the I.D. Pikes Peak electric race car. The four-wheel drive electric race car shows off the potential of VW’s new MEB platform, which will be the basis for its upcoming I.D. family of electric vehicles.

The last time that Volkswagen last entered the Pikes Peak hillclimb was back in 1987 with a dual-engine 652 horsepower Golf, but unfortunately it did not come out on top.

“It is about time we settled the score,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Sven Smeets. “The I.D. R Pikes Peak represents an extremely exciting challenge for us, to show what is possible in motorsport with an electric drivetrain. The entire team behind our driver Romain Dumas is highly motivated to set a new record for electric cars.”

Volkswagen plans to introduce up to 20 electric cars by 2025 with production model of the first I.D. model scheduled to start at the end of 2019 in Zwickau, Germany.
