VW’s all-new 2012 Beetle is set to go on sale this October with a starting price at $19,765. It’s going to be available with either a 170-hp 2.5L, 200-hp 2.0L or a 2.0L diesel. If you are looking for even more power under the hood, VW employees have confirmed that a more-powerful Beetle R is going to eventually be released.

VW is going to be bringing the Golf R here within the next 12 months, which is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L that puts out 270-hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The Beetle R is expected to get the same turbocharged 2.0L, but since it will not get the all-wheel-drive system from the Golf R, the Beetle R will have slightly less power.

The Beetle R is expected to debut this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. VW executives are still mulling a Beetle R cabrio. VW is trying to figure out if the demand would be high enough to justify building it.
