While fully electric cars are the goal for most automakers, the reality is that the infrastructure isn’t completely ready for all the new electric cars that are promised in the next few years. So what’s the next best option? Plug-in hybrids, since they offer the best of both worlds without the range anxiety. Even with that knowledge, Volkswagen has no plans to offer any plug-in hybrid models in the United States.
Car and Driver is reporting that even though VW is working on at least five new electric cars and mild-hybrid models, plug-in hybrids won’t be an option here. VW may go even further by eliminating plug-in hybrids in other markets as well, like Europe. Volkswagen brand boss Herbert Diess stated that the lower tax incentives for plug-in hybrid models is one of the main reasons that VW has decided to not focus on plug-in hybrids.
Although VW has no plans for plug-in hybrids, VW has a goal of selling at least a million BEVs a year by 2025, with about 200,000 sales expected in North America. VW also believes that its electric vehicles will be profitable from day one.
