Earlier this month it was discovered that Toyota registered the GR Corolla name in Australia, but very little details were known about the sportier Corolla. Now Car and Driver is reporting that the GR Corolla is coming in 2022.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The GR Corolla will be amplify the performance of the Corolla hatchback, which means it will be the perfect rival to the VW GTI and other performance oriented compact models, like the Honda Civic Si and Subaru Impreza WRX.

Under the hood the GR Corolla will get the same 1.6-liter three-cylinder as the GR Yaris, which will generate 257 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. of torque. The GR Yaris has all-wheel drive, but it’s unlikely that the GR Corolla will send the power to all four wheels.

Toyota has yet to announce the GR Corolla, so we’re hoping the reports are accurate and that the 2023 Corolla will get a bit more exciting.
