Saying only that, “something eXciting is on its way 🤫”, BMW teased the second-generation X2 on the brand’s Instagram account. The short video was posted by Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design and shows a silhouetted vehicle with an SUV Coupe profile and an angled rear hatch with a rear spoiler at its base. Next, the vehicle rotates around to its front, where we see its illuminated grille flanked by LED lighting. Its design calls to mind the larger X4 Sports Activity Coupe, not the current X2 hatchback.
The video’s posting suggests that a full reveal of the redesigned crossover SUV is imminent.

Of course, few may care what the next BMW X2 is like as it remains the brand’s least-popular model in the U.S. Sales totaled 2,641 units in 2022 according to Automotive News, and a mere 141 in the first six months of 2022.
The current BMW X2 is powered by a 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and shares it mechanics and platform with the 2023 BMW X1. But seeing that the X1 was redesigned this year, it wouldn’t be surprising if the forthcoming X2 was also redesigned, and powered by the X1’s 241-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter Miller Cycle four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

But reports suggest that a battery-electric iX2 is coming as well, as BMW is pouring more than $380 million into its Regensburg factory to build it. The new iX2 could share its dual-motor powertrain with the iX1 xDrive30e, shown above, which generates 313 horsepower and 364 pound-feet from a 64.7-kWh battery pack. Range is said to be 272 miles.
Of course which X2 comes stateside remains to be seen.
While its official reveal hasn’t been announced, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show in November, with it going on sale in 2024 as a 2025 model.
