Scion Vice President Doug Murtha has confirmed some bad news for Scion FR-S fans – Scion has no plans to build a convertible or turbocharged version. It’s long been rumored that Scion could release a more powerful FR-S or even a drop top version, but Toyota reportedly couldn’t produce a strong business case for either version.
Even though Scion execs and customers have been asking for more versions of the FR-S, Toyota has determined that neither version would sell in high enough volumes to justify the development costs.

“I think we were pretty aggressive on our (submitted plan), but we looked at what we would have conceivably lost on the [convertible] and said, ‘We’re not going to even push it further,'” Murtha recently told Wards Auto. He also added that the turbocharged edition is “not something that’s coming.”

Sales of the FR-S have already started to slide with sales down 23.2 percent through October. Murtha is hoping that the new Release Series 1.0 FR-S will bring some much needed attention to the FR-S.
