There have been a lot of rumors about what we can expect for the next-generation Jeep Wrangler that is expected to be introduced for the 2018 model year. While we’ve heard reports about an aluminum body for the next Wrangler, one thing that is for sure that it will get a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
Currently the Wrangler is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, but a filing this month with the Securities and Exchange Commission confirms that the next Wrangler is getting a new automatic transmission. In the filing, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) confirmed that the eight-speed transmission that is currently used by the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee will be used in all of its rear-wheel-drive vehicles, except the Viper and heavy-duty Ram pickup.

The filing also states that the ZF eight-speed automatic is 9 percent more fuel efficient than the current five-speed.
Why is Chrysler waiting so long to put the new transmission in the Wrangler? Chrysler says that the eight-speed automatic does not fit in the current model.
