The Porsche Taycan electric car will officially arrive next year and if you’re wondering how much it will cost, we have a new hint from Porsche. Porsche has confirmed that the starting price for the Taycan will be between the Cayenne and Panamera, which means it will likely start around $80,000.
Speaking to Automotive News, Robert Meier, the model line director for the Taycan stated, “We’re expecting a price somewhere between a Cayenne and a Panamera.” In the US the 2019 Cayenne starts at $65,700, while the Panamera starts at $85,000.
While the starting price for the Taycan will make it an easy rival for the Tesla Model S, Porsche is planning higher performance versions, like a Taycan Turbo S, which will be priced well over $200k.
The Taycan is powered by two synchronous electric motors that give it a total 600 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time under 3.5 seconds. “Asynchronous e-motors are clearly more affordable, but they have one very important disadvantage: You can only overload the motor once when you want high dynamic acceleration before it quickly reaches its limits the second or third time,” Meier said. “That’s fine for most electric cars but not for a high-performance Porsche.”
The Porsche Taycan will also be able to drive up to 310 miles on a single charge. Initially Porsche plans to produce 20,000 Taycan electric cars a year, but if demand is higher it could increase production at its Zuffenhausen plant. Porsche recently announced that it will add up to 1,200 jobs at the plant to support production of the Taycan.
