Nissan IDx Concept Gets More Modern and Borrows the Next Z Platform

Although Nissan has yet to release any production details its new small rear-wheel-drive coupe, a new report claims that it will be built on the same platform as the next-generation Nissan Z.

Just last month it was reported that Nissan may not release a production version of last year’s IDx concept – citing concerns that it needed a lower cost and lighter rear wheel drive platform. Although Nissan has yet to release any production details about the rear-wheel-drive coupe, a new report claims that it will be built on the same platform as the next-generation Nissan Z.
At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled the IDx concept with its retro exterior that recalled memories of the retro Datsun 1600 and other past Nissan sports cars. Nissan has reportedly gone back to the drawing board and now envisions a small rear-wheel-drive coupe that will borrow styling cues from the Sports Sedan Concept that debuted earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. This means that the retro styling from the original concept will give way to a more modern exterior.

Under the hood there are also some other changes, with the production version reportedly being powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder, like its main competitors, the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ coupes.

For now we’ll have to wait until Nissan officially releases more information, but it’s expected that it won’t arrive until the 2018 model year, which will be after the next-generation Z.
