It seems like everyday more news trickles out about the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Fiat/ Alfa Romeo version. First it was originally reported that the next MX-5 Miata would debut next year at the Chicago Auto Show, but now those plans have been shelved. Second the Alfa Romeo version may actually be badged a Fiat or Abarth.
Mazda is reportedly going to give the world a sneak peek at the next MX-5 Miata next month at the New York Auto Show, which is much earlier than planned. The preview will likely be the stripped down chassis of the next MX-5 Miata.
It was originally thought that Alfa Romeo would get a version of the new roadster, but now it’s being reported that the co-developed roadster may in fact be sold under the Abarth or Fiat brands. The reason for the change, Fiat CEO Sergio Machionne does not want any Alfa Romeo badged cars to be built outside of Italy and since the new roadster will be built in Japan, it cannot be badged as an Alfa Romeo. It’s also been reported that the Fiat/ Alfa Romeo roadster will be powered by the same turbocharged engine as the 500 Abarth.
Stay tuned…
