There’s a chance that the next-generation M3 and M4 could be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder.
The 2015 BMW M3 and M4 are both powered by a 425-hp 3.0L six-cylinder engine, which is more fuel efficient than the V8 engine used in the previous generation. Now there’s a chance that the next-generation M3 and M4 could lose two more cylinders by being powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder.
Mercedes-Benz and VW are proving that its possible to get an insane amount of power out a small four-cylinder engine, so there’s a possibility that BMW may go the same route with the next M3 and M4. BMW’s Carsten Pries, M Division Head of Product Management stated that it’s “foreseeable” that a four-cylinder engine could be introduced in the future.

“We do not start our design process with a power output in mind. We have a set of characteristics that a new model must meet. For sure, you could see a future [M3] powered by a four-cylinder engine,” Pries told Motoring.
The original M3 was powered by a four-cylinder engine, but today BMW’s M division does not offer a four-cylinder in any of its models. Don’t expect to get confirmation about a four-cylinder M3 or M4 for quite a while, since the current models will likely be around for six to seven years.
