Chevy has unveiled the 2018 Equinox compact SUV, which is all-new from the ground up. On the outside it borrows styling cues from other new Chevy models, like the new Cruze and Malibu, while under the hood there are some even bigger changes.

The new Equinox looks sleeker and more stylish than the current generation. It borrows a lot of styling cues from the new Malibu, which is especially noticeable from the profile. Projector-beam headlamps are standard, along with LED daytime running lamps. At the rear, horizontal taillamps emphasize the Equinox’s wide stance, while uplevel models feature LED taillamp.

While the new exterior is a welcome departure from the somewhat conservative exterior of the last Equinox, under the hood there are some nice, significant changes. The 2018 Equinox will offer a range of three turbocharged engines — including a new turbo-diesel four-cylinder. They include a 1.5L turbo, a 2.0L turbo and a 1.6L turbo-diesel. The 1.5L turbo and 1.6L turbo-diesel are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0L turbo is mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Chevy estimates that the turbo-diesel will get up to 40 mpg, while the 1.5L will get up to 31 mpg, while the 2.0L will the least efficient model with only 28 mpg.

The all-new Equinox is about 400 pounds lighter than the outgoing model and a new kneeling rear seat enables a flat rear load floor. The 2018 Equinox will also be offered with 7- and 8-inch-diagonal MyLink infotainment systems designed to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an available OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

To keep everyone safe, the 2018 Equinox will be offered with radar- and camera-based adaptive technologies that can provide alerts to potential crash threats, allowing the driver to react and make changes to avoid them. Some of the new features include, Safety Alert Seat, Surround Vision, Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.

The 2018 Equinox will arrive in the first quarter of 2017.
