Before GM officially unveiled the successor the unloved Chevy Aveo, GM gave us a preview of its new subcompact with the Chevy Aveo RS concept. The concept was far sportier than anything wearing the “Aveo” name before it. The Aveo RS concept was powered by a 138-hp turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder. Well as you now know, the Aveo badge didn’t make it onto the rear end of the new Chevy small car and instead it received a new name, the Chevy Sonic. chevrolet_aveo_rs_concept_new_rear.jpg

The Chevy Aveo RS concept may have simply been a preivew of the Sonic, but the model created so much buzz, that it looks like GM is going to produce it. GMI’s sources are claiming that the Aveo RS has been given the green light, under the new name, Sonic RS and will most likely end up in showrooms next year. The Sonic RS will be powered by the 138-hp 1.4L turbocharged engine. It will get exterior styling that is reminiscent of the concept with its aggressive front air dam, fog lights and a sporty body kit. Tweaks to the Sonic’s suspension are also expected with larger brakes.

The Chevy Sonic RS is expected to go into production in 2012 and be available in both hatchback and sedan versions. For now Sonic fans will have to make due with the Z-Spec accessories for the 2012 Sonic.
