If you’ve been patiently waiting for Volvo to bring the V60 diesel plug-in hybrid to the U.S., you’ll be disappointed to hear that it’s not going to happen. Instead Volvo has just confirmed that a gasoline plug-in hybrid system will arrive in the U.S. next year under the hood of the next-generation XC90 SUV.
Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president of Volvo Cars product planning, recently revealed to Drive that the XC90 will be the first Volvo in the U.S. to get the new plug-in hybrid system. The system, which will be called “Twin Engine” will use four-cylinder engine placed at the front of the vehicle and an electric motor that will be placed at the rear axle.

Volvo hasn’t completely given up on the diesel plug-in hybrid, but since gasoline is the “most global fuel,” it makes sense for now.
