Mercedes-Benz is going to expand its sedan lineup further with a new A-Class sedan, which will go head-to-head with other small luxury sedans, like the Audi A3. The new A-Class is being previewed this week as a concept at the Shanghai Motor Show with the debut of the Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan.
Mercedes-Benz already offers the compact CLA, but the A-Class will likely have more practical proportions. The concept features an evolution of the “sensual purity” design language and previews what we can expect all the brand’s compacts to look like in the future with its smoother lines.
“Our Concept A Sedan shows, that the time of creases is over”, say Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. “With its perfect proportions and a sensual treatment of surfaces with reduced lines, it is the next milestone of Sensual Purity and has the potential to introduce a new design era.”
The Concept A Sedan’s proportions are similar to the CLA, but a taller roofline and shorter hood will provide more interior space. It also has a vertical C‑pillar, larger side windows and the higher beltline than the CLA. From the front, the concept features the Panamericana grille, which will be bolted on the Mercedes-AMG version.
With the success of its current compact models, Mercedes-Benz is going to expand its new A-Class models with the introduction of a new A-Class sedan, a small crossover and maybe even a convertible. The first new A-Class model will be the new hatchback, which could debut later this year.
