Currently the Hyundai Ioniq Electric has a driving range of 124 miles, which puts it below rivals, like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3. Well luckily it looks like Hyundai is going to fix that. Hyundai has confirmed that the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric will arrive with a longer driving range.
The guys over at Inside EVs recently spoke with a rep at Hyundai, who confirmed that the 2020 Ioniq will be getting a battery upgrade. “The Ioniq’s range will improve at the model-year change. It will get bigger,” stated Gil Castillo, Hyundai’s senior group manager for alternative vehicle strategy. Sadly dont get your hopes up that the 2020 Ioniq Electric’s range will mirror that of the new Kona Electric, since Castillo also confirmed that it won’t have the same driving range. The Kona Electric can drive up to 258 miles on a single charge.
“It will be a nice improvement but not like the Kona’s range,” Castillo stated.
Since the rep only confirmed that the 2020 Ioniq Electric will be getting a battery upgrade, we still don’t now how much extra driving range will be added. If Hyundai does a conservative upgrade, hopefully it will at least be able to match the Nissan Leaf with its 150 mile range.
