In the past few months, Honda has grabbed attention with its retro themed EV concepts and according to Honda’s design boss Makoto Iwaki, more EV concepts are in the works.

This week Honda pulled the covers off its second EV concept, the Sports EV concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. The electric sports car concept followed the Urban EV concept that we saw a few months ago. While the Urban EV concept previews a new electric car that Honda is going to introduce in 2019, Honda has not announced if a production version of the Sports EV concept will be produced.

Even if the Sports EV concept remains purely a concept, Honda is planning on introducing more concepts in the near future. Honda’s design boss, Makoto Iwaki revealed to Auto Express at the Tokyo Motor Show that Honda is going to preview its future electric cars with more concepts.

“I cannot tell you the exact timing but there will be more EV concepts.”

Iwaki also revealed that Honda is going to try to transition the Urban EV concept into a production model with as little design changes as possible.

“I try to transfer that design 100 percent but some details will look different,” Iwaki-san said. “It’s difficult to accurately say how the details will change. But body size will be almost exactly the same [as the concept] and we will make the front face friendly so people feel attached. The headlamps design will make that expression – this is a simple design; we try to keep simplicity.”

The new electric car will launch first in Europe in 2019 and then in Japan in 2020. Honda hasn’t announced if it will be offered in the United States.
