Last week Hyundai’s new Genesis luxury brand previewed its first SUV at the New York Auto Show, which is one of six models that the brand hopes to have on the market by 2020. We already know that the lineup will consist of several sedans and two SUVs, but now we’re hearing news about one other model – a range topping coupe.
The new Genesis coupe will be less like the last rear-wheel drive coupe that rivaled muscle cars, like the Camaro and Mustang and instead will be more luxurious like the BMW 6 Series. The coupe was previewed in 2015 with the Vision G concept.
Genesis head of design Luk Donckerwolke revealed at the New York Auto Show that the brand wants a BMW 6 Series and Mercedes-Benz SL competitor.
“What we are doing here is creating the first step… To be honest, I’m not really looking at the others, I have the advantage of creating something new. I don’t have to look at others, but there’s certainly going to be a Gran Turismo two-door.”

One big difference between the Genesis coupe and its rivals will be that you won’t find a large V8 under the hood. Instead the large coupe will be motivated by an electrified powertrain.
“As much as I like to drive V-8s, I believe electrification is going to be a main element,” said Genesis brand chief Manfred Fitzgerald.
Don’t expect to see the Genesis coupe anytime soon, since it’s expected that it will be last of the six models to arrive. The G80 and G90 sedans have already arrived and later this year a smaller G70 is expected to debut, which will be followed by a BMW X5 rival called the GV80. Lastly a smaller SUV called the GV70 will also join the lineup before the coupe.
