U.S. buyers have traditionally chosen sedan body styles over their hatchback counterparts, but that could change soon with the growing number of new compact hatchbacks that will soon be offered here. Honda has already announced plans to introduce a hatchback version of the next-generation Civic in the U.S. and now it’s being reported that the next Cruze will also be offered in a hatchback version here.

A hatchback version of the next-generation Cruze was reportedly shown to dealers last week in Las Vegas. The five-door Cruze hatchback is labeled as a 2016 model, but it’s expected that it will arrive sometime after the new sedan at the beginning of 2016. The current Cruze is already offered as a hatchback in other markets and GM’s product chief Mark Reuss says that it was a “a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake” to not offer it here.

When the Cruze hatchback arrives it will go head-to-head with the Ford Focus hatchback, Civic hatchback, Hyundai Elantra GT, Mazda3 five-door and the Volkswagen Golf.

The all-new 2016 Cruze is going to debut this week.
