Chevrolet has unveiled the FNR-X all-purpose sports concept at the Shanghai Motor Show. The Chevrolet FNR-X concept builds on the design of the FNR concept that was unveiled two years ago, by showcasing how the design works on an SUV.

The FNR name stands for Chevy’s “Find New Roads” slogan.

“The Chevrolet-FNR is one of Chevrolet’s most forward-thinking concept cars, truly exemplifying the brand’s passion for innovation and ingenuity,” said Alan Batey, GM executive vice president and president of GM North America and Global Chevrolet. “The FNR-X builds on the design and technology showcased on the original FNR concept and embodies the belief at Chevrolet’s core that anything is possible.”

The FNR-X concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can switch between its engine and electric motor, with two driving modes: V (Versatility) and S (Sport). In V mode the FNR-X’s adaptive suspension raises to give the SUV more ground clearance, while in S mode the vehicle is lowered.

The concept also features an Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) that uses optical and acoustic recognition sensors all over its body to provide highly autonomous driver assistance by choosing the best route based on its predictions for complex road conditions. Plus its panoramic intelligent augmented reality head-up display offers a 270-degree posterior-lateral view.

To enter the FNR-X concept, the rear-opening suicide doors are controlled remotely and once inside the cabin’s hexagonal textures were apparently inspired by graphene crystal structures. The steering wheel and dashboard have an integrated design and the seats ride on multipurpose rails to individualize storage space.

Don’t expect to see the FNR-X concept in a showroom anytime soon, but many of its design elements could show up on future models.
